Square Scandinavian woodland prints arranged in a 3x3 gallery wall above a bed in a calm first apartment bedroom

First Apartment Wall Decor Checklist — 10 Steps to a Calm Wall

Blank walls are one of the first things you notice in a new apartment — and one of the last things most people get around to fixing. This checklist takes you from bare wall to finished in ten steps, without a big budget and without waiting on shipping.

1. Pick one wall, not every wall

Walk through the apartment and choose the wall you see most often — usually above the bed, the sofa, or the desk. Decorating one wall well makes the whole room feel finished. Trying to fill every wall at once usually ends with nothing on any of them.

2. Measure before you buy

Note the width and height of the space, and what sits beneath it. A good rule: art above furniture should be roughly two-thirds the width of that furniture. Write the numbers down — guessing is how prints end up too small.

3. Choose a narrow color range

Calm walls come from restraint. Pick one or two tones and stay there — soft forest greens, muted sky blues, or warm woodland neutrals. Prints from the same landscape sit together naturally, even when they are not identical.

4. Decide: one, three, or nine prints

One print anchors a nightstand or desk. Three in a row work above a bed or sofa. Nine in a 3x3 grid fill a larger wall completely. If you are unsure, start with one — you can always add. For layouts and spacing, see the square gallery wall guide.

5. Stick to standard frame sizes

Standard sizes mean affordable frames from IKEA, Target, or Amazon — and easy replacements if one dents during your next move. Simple black, white, or natural wood frames work with almost everything.

6. Choose digital downloads to skip the wait

A digital download arrives the moment you order. No shipping, no customs, no tracking a parcel for two weeks while the wall stays empty. Browse the Square Nordic Posters collection for individual prints, or the Nordic Portal Square Set for nine coordinated prints in one download.

7. Print on matte paper

Matte paper avoids glare and photographs well. Print at home, or take the file to FedEx Office, Walgreens, or a local print shop. The full walkthrough is in the printing guide.

8. Hang without losing your deposit

In a rental, use picture hanging strips rated for your frame's weight instead of nails. Mark positions with painter's tape first, step back, and check the spacing before anything goes on the wall.

9. Live with it for a week

Hang the prints, then leave them alone. After a week you will know whether the wall feels right or needs one small adjustment. Most walls need less than you think.

10. Add slowly

A good wall grows over time. One print this month, two more later. The goal is a wall that feels considered — not a wall that was finished in an afternoon and forgotten.

What you need

A tape measure, painter's tape, picture hanging strips, standard frames, and the print files. That is the whole list. Download the files tonight, print this week, and the wall is done before the moving boxes are.
